A brick derby is a Pinewood Derby-style event where participants build and race LEGO® vehicles down a sloped track for fun and friendly competition.
The cars may be toys, but the racing is very real - and always exciting!
Gaining in popularity, Brick derby events have become a common attraction at LEGO® conventions and Cub Scout events alike.
Brick derbies are also a great STEM learning activity, as they introduce engineering concepts like force, friction, and gravity.
The unofficial Brick Derby Association, or uBDA, is a LEGO® group with a special interest in brick-built, downhill derbies. Although we are a small, local group, we hope to network with other LEGO® derby clubs to help build a world-wide, brick racing community.
As there is no official LEGO® derby association, there are no official derby rules. We took the initiative to form the unofficial Brick Derby Association and to draft some universal guidelines for our vehicles and races.
While using Pinewood Derby rules as a blueprint, we compiled and adapted some standards for a fun and fair, brick derby experience for everyone.
Thanks to innovations by Derby Magic and Brick Derby™ brand, racers can run their brick-built vehicles down the same tracks used at Pinewood Derbies across the country.
Derby Magic and Brick Derby™, manufacture LEGO® compatible chassis, wheel assemblies, and supplemental weights specifically for downhill derby racing. These third-party accessories have become the standard for brick racing.
LEGO® is the largest tire manufacturer in the world, and offers several wheel options, so why do we use third party wheel assemblies? The simple answer is, LEGO© wheels were not designed to go fast or far.
Additionally, the wheels must be a particular size to accommodate a regulation derby track and to adhere to the required vehicle specifications. This variable disqualifies a majority of LEGO® wheel combinations.
For the sake of faster, more exciting races, and the ability to use a traditional Pinewood Derby track, the unofficial Brick Derby Association adopted the Derby Magic and Brick Derby™ line of products for our club.
The unofficial Brick Derby Association is not affiliated with Derby Magic or the Brick Derby™ brand.
